22.- MARCH 1: PHILIPPINES

The city of MANILA, was first founded in 1571 by Legazpi, a Spanish conquistador. It served as the political, cultural, educational, religious and commercial center of Spanish empire in the East.
In 1946, the USA recognized Philippine independence
In 1976, owing a great respect to the history of MANILA, President Ferdinand Marcos created the Metropolitan MANILA Area. In 1986 Marcos appointed his wife Imelda Marcos as governor of Metro Manila.

FORT SANTIAGO INTRAMUROS (Within the walls), built in 1663. Served as military headquarters for the Spanish, British, American and Japanese coloniozers until his destruccion in 1945. Restored as a public park in 1950.

During World War II, hundred of men and women where jailed, tortured and executed..

Dr. Jose Rizalde, a Philippine national hero was also jailed here.
